March 1, 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am writing to inform you about: a skin irritation some of our students and teachers have experienced over the past couple of weeks at Meadowlands Public School; the actions and precautions that have been taken and; what the next steps will be to ensure all students are learning in a safe and healthy environment.

On February 19, 2019, a number of students developed skin irritation. We connected with Ottawa Public Health (OPH) to help assess the situation. The cause of the skin irritation is still under review. However, based on the information that we have available to date, including medical assessments of some of the affected children by physicians in the community, Ottawa Public Health has determined it is unlikely to be an infectious disease. The majority of skin irritations have since resolved.

What we have done so far

In consultation with Ottawa Public Health, we took steps to remove potential irritants from the classroom environment.  The affected classroom (219) was thoroughly cleaned and then rinsed with water. An inspection of the building was performed, and as a precaution, the ventilation has been increased to draw additional fresh air into the building. All of these precautionary actions were taken in order to eliminate possible irritants. In consultation with Ottawa Public Health, we expect that students will be able to safely return to their regular classroom effective Monday, March 4, 2019.

If your child develops a NEW rash

If your child develops evidence of skin irritation, please contact the school.  If you are concerned about your child’s health, please see your healthcare provider. Over the weekend, medical advice is available through Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000

As a precaution

It was reported that children who were experiencing skin irritation could have come in contact with “slime” (goop-like product created from glue and contact lens solution). “Slime” is known to be a cause of contact dermatitis/skin irritation in some children. As a precaution, we ask that no students bring this product to school. Please consider discarding any “slime” at home as well.

Throughout this process, I have been in contact with my superintendent, with the Manager of Physical Facilities, the Supervisor of Health and Safety, Ottawa Public Health representatives.

Our students’ health and safety remain a top priority of all staff at Meadowlands Public School. We will continue to work with Ottawa Public Health to monitor the situation.  I appreciate your support.

Thank you for your continued support. I hope everyone has a restful weekend.
